MPR Says: The design of the light panels Gemini 1×1 is absolutely striking. Like if Apple got into designing studio lights. Apparently the new philosophy in the lighting industry is to use lightweight durable components instead of solid steel and light panels have executed on that growing trend.
The rear of the unit is made out of cast aluminum. The core of protective pieces are plastic but the casting actually extends under these corner pieces and bolts directly to the cast aluminum heat sinks.
The yoke is made out of aluminum and power ballast or battery plate mounts directly under the light so the center of gravity doesn’t move anywhere which makes it easier to manage.
Gemini 1×1 is designed in such a way that it can be set upside down on a table or whichever way the yoke isn’t too pointing and it can be set face-up on a hard floor without impacting the ability of the fan to dissipate heat. My favorite fan feature on lights like this or it can be set to auto which will turn the fan on after it heats up beyond 75 degrees or you can turn the fan on to maximum blowing all the time.
Getting started with the light panels Gemini is pretty simple it’s fully assembled out of the box just plug it in and turn it on. The front diffusion panel can be removed and replaced with different levels of diffusion.
The way it has both 5-pin dmx and ethernet dmx it also has a USB port to perform firmware updates with a flash drive you can also use the USB port to save settings and presets and then load those settings and presets onto other lights.
There are three knobs that also act as buttons and there’s a cancel button. There’s also six preset buttons that are insanely useful and probably one of my favorite things about this light if you’re scouting a location to film with this light you can dial in color temperatures colors or one of the six presets and then if you need to you can export those settings and presets to all of your other lights. Then when you get to the location later to actually film you just hit the preset button to load the color effects or other settings you’ve predetermined. The preset button saves all the light settings even the fan setting.
The Gemini has a set of insanely customizable special effects. It has standard ones like police fireplace lightning and they’re all super customizable from color temperature to speed and depth of flicker. They have manual triggering options so you can click a button to trigger the special effect in manual mode.
The light also has the regular color modes you would expect from an RGB LED panel today. The gels mode you can easily scroll through tons of Lee or Rosco filters while toggling between a tungsten or daylight source but in all of those modes you can dial the intensity in width increments of 0.1 percent which is super precise and very useful for lights getting as powerful as they are today.
