NAB Show 2017-VR Camera Highlight & Wrap Up

David C. Wells of MPR wraps up the NAB Show 2017 with the latest in VR cameras – Google Jump YiiHalo, OZO, Nokia and more. “In 2016 there were just a few VR cameras and rigs.  In 2017: hundreds.  The Yi Halo camera with their Google Jump partnership and flexing a full stereoscopic array was the clear winner with many VR gurus I chatted with.  Looks like live event capture is going lead the charge to a solid business model.”

Faces Behind The Camera – Phil Hoelcher

For my ‘Faces Behind the Camera’ photography series, I caught up with one of my favorite South Florida crew Phil Hoelcher on location at his new home in Umatilla, Florida where he continues training others in his lifelong passion for the dog sport of Schutzhund.

A stunt regular and dog whisperer, I wanted to capture Phil’s spontaneity and wit in the outdoors. Phil is best known for his work on The Dark Knight (2008), Law Abiding Citizen (2009) and Transporter 2 (2005) and most recently as a dog handler in Homeland and Madame Secretary. …

Vintage Camera Lenses from the 60’s & 70’s are Popular Again

Vintage glass for content creation is on the rise.  At Moving Picture Rental, we’ve fallen in love with Super Baltars for a variety of reasons.  Unlike many modern prime lenses that yield ultra tack sharp results that lack character, reveal imperfections in actors complexions and in general deliver a clinical look, Super Baltars give images high contrast and warm flesh tones plus they create cool flares. Some people say that Super Baltars are the Stradivarius of cinema prime lenses.  That’s why we have these camera lens rental available at o …

Visit to SIM Toronto – Film and TV Gear Convention

The Film and TV Gear Convention
Had the great fortune to travel to Canada for the annual Sim Digital’s Annual Technology Showcase.  I quickly learned that Toronto is a production epicenter for film and TV gear. Toronto is an international city with many different integrated cultures that lends itself to studio and on-location production for dozens of feature films, commercials, and TV series.

Sim Digital pulled out all the stops for this event with the latest in film and TV gear.  Walking through the door I was warmly greeted by the SI …

The Arri Alexa Classic Camera Shoots Beautiful Films On A Budget

The Arri Alexa classic camera is a 6 year old design but it’s a totally relevant digital cinema camera!  We’ve seen the used value of these cameras diminish dramatically over 2016.  All of us in the rental business are scratching our heads about this camera’s devaluation as its shot Academy Award winning feature films.  This camera has probably shot over 5,000 feature films and countless TV commercials.  The sensor is fundamentally the same as current Alexa cameras.  For example, one of the few differentiators between this camera and the …

Film Crew! LifePower Can Ease Location Work

Our good friend, colleague, and First AD Gary Sales stopped by Moving Picture Rental with a cool new product called LifePower that’s perfect for people working in film.

LifePower is a terrific new technology that can power any 110 volt device using a battery — the same battery that’s used in Tesla cars. For film people working on location LifePower is super handy.  It powers laptops, lights, a printer, etc. Plus, it’s small and affordable.
